Triplet and sextuplet
A triplet is three notes in the place of two of the same value: three eighths in a quarter, three quarters in a half, three sixteenths in an eighth. It is the most common, and it occurs in simple meters.
A sextuplet is six notes in the place of four: six sixteenths in a quarter. Grouped in threes it sounds like two triplets in a row, which is why it is sometimes written that way, with a number over each half.
Triplets with rests and unequal values
A triplet need not have three equal notes. It can begin with a rest, or join two of its three parts into a longer note: a quarter and an eighth inside a triplet is a very common rhythm. The sum must still be three eighths.
