Which go with each chord
Not all tensions work with all chords. The practical rule is that a tension should sit a whole step (a major 9th) above the chord note beneath it. A half step away (a minor 9th), it clashes. For example, the natural 11th on a major chord is a minor ninth from its 3rd, so it is raised a half step: ♯11.
On dominant chords, where tension is the goal, almost everything is valid, which is why alterations are mostly played with there. Diminished chords take a whole step above each of their four notes.
