The off-beat
A note is off the beat when it sounds on a weak beat, or the weak part of a beat, and the strong part before it is a rest. The point of support is left empty and the note arrives afterwards, light and detached.
It is regular if the rest and the note last the same, like eighth and eighth, and irregular if they last differently.
Why it sounds so different
An off-beat leaves the point of support empty: the pulse is felt through its absence, which is why it brings lightness. You hear it in waltz or march accompaniments and in popular rhythms: the drums in much pop mark the second and fourth beats, the weak ones.
