First and second endings
When the repeat has to end differently, the endings are written in brackets. The first time you play ending 1 and repeat; the second time you skip ending 1 and go straight to ending 2.
More than two endings
There can be more than two: 1, 2, 3, or 1.–3. and 4. if the same ending serves several repeats. An ending closes with a repeat bar if you go back, and without one if you go on. It is very common in songs and dance music, where the text or choreography asks for several turns.
