Through the dominant, and by enharmony
The dominant of the new key is enough to get anywhere, with or without its II. A II – V – I toward a distant key is the most used device in jazz, and however far away it is, the force of the dominant carries the ear. What distinguishes this modulation from a secondary dominant is that it stays afterward.
Enharmony exploits chords with two possible readings: a diminished chord can resolve to four different tonics, and a dominant seventh can be respelled as an augmented sixth and resolve in another key. Beethoven and Schubert made great use of these doors to travel far in little time.
